Green Team Helps Local Community Organizations

The Manitoba Government provided $9 million this year for the province’s Green Team program. Priorities for the 2022 summer season focus on:

· community-based organizations and municipal governments that can offer full-time employment opportunities for youth;

· projects that support COVID-19 response and recovery efforts; and

· projects that can demonstrate community need and partnerships.

This year, approximately 700 projects across the province will receive funding for the program, with more than 2,200 youth expected to receive work. The program funds 100% of wage costs for non-profit organizations, education authorities and NACCs and 50% of wage costs for municipalities on a cost-shared basis. The Department of Municipal Relations values their partnership with not-for-profit organizations and rural municipal governments as they work together to help youth gain critical work experience support employers during the response and recovery phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and build the economy. All organizations are encouraged to hire youth who are living in the community where the project is located. The total funding approved can be used to hire as many youth as needed to work on the approved projects starting as early as May 1st and if needed, ending as late as September 30th.

The organizations in the constituency of Roblin, which includes Charleswood and Headingley, to receive funding this summer are:

· Friends of the Harte Trail for trail maintenance and conservation

· Grace Community Church for recreation

· Oasis Community Church for recreation and volunteer coordination

· Westboine Park Housing Co-op for grounds maintenance

· John Blumberg Softball Complex for grounds and building maintenance

· Roblin Park Community Centre for grounds and building maintenance

· Charleswood Minor Baseball Association for grounds maintenance

· Purple Loosestrife Project of Manitoba for conservation and data management

· Charleswood Rotary for trail maintenance, conservation and community beautification in Assiniboine Forest

· McDonald-Headingley Recreation Association for running Recreation programs

If you missed applying for the Green Team grant this year but think your organization may be eligible for this funding, I encourage you to look into it for next year. Application deadline is generally sometime in January for the following summer. Youth aged 15 – 29 can apply for Green Team jobs through the Students Job MB app. This free app matches you to jobs in your area or around Manitoba with the click of a button. Participants work on a variety of community development projects that improve neighbourhoods, promote community involvement, and help develop young leaders. Green Team funding through Manitoba Sustainable Development also supports provincial parks by creating roles for youth interested in working with wildlife, in forestry, or assisting at interpretive centres.

Eligible applicants include non-profit organizations through Manitoba education authorities throughout Manitoba.
